VEB MÖBELFABRIK [DE]

Exploration #287. The former VEB Möbelfabrik Colmnitz in Saxony began in the 19th century as a chair factory created from the Neumühle site. After decades of furniture production, nationalisation and conversion under the GDR, it closed in 1992.

The industrial story of this abandoned factory starts in 1885, when chair maker Carl Friedrich Hofmann bought the Neumühle property in Colmnitz. By 1896, Hofmann and Carl Albert Kittel had turned chair making into factory production, linking the village to Saxony’s furniture industry. The first chapter ended in 1937, when financial difficulties forced the business to stop. Two years later, Helmut Richter acquired the buildings and rapidly expanded furniture production through military contracts during the Nazi period.

After 1945, private ownership disappeared and the plant was nationalised as VEB Möbelfabrik Colmnitz. Under the GDR, the factory mainly produced kitchen furniture, cupboards and buffets. But the planned economy created overproduction, while a destructive storm in 1958 further weakened the business. Furniture production faded, and the site was absorbed into VEB Bodenbearbeitungsgeräte Leipzig.

Its final role was agricultural: the Colmnitz works made parts for the KS-6 self-propelled beet harvester and later spray booms for crop protection. After German reunification, the factory could not survive the market transition. The last machines were dismantled on 31 March 1992, leaving empty halls and a surviving office wing.

ZECHE FARMER [DE]

Exploration #275 Zeche Farmer. Zeche Farmer is a former coal mine shaft located in the Saarland region of Germany. Like many other mining sites in this area, it was shut down following the steady decline in coal demand, which made extraction economically unsustainable. After its closure, the site was gradually abandoned and left without protection.

Over time, it suffered from looting and the destruction of its machinery, a fate shared by many industrial structures that lose their original function. The absence of conservation measures accelerated its physical decay, erasing much of the technical heritage that once defined the site.

Today, Zeche Farmer survives in a marginal and improvised form: parts of the former mining complex are used as storage space by local farmers. While this new use has little to do with its industrial past, it represents a pragmatic form of reuse and highlights the complex afterlife of industrial landscapes in post-mining regions..

CENTRALE TERMICA UNIONE MANIFATTURE [IT]

Exploration #276 Centrale termica unione manifatture. These photos capture the abandoned thermal power plant of one of the Unione Manifatture factories, a major textile group that operated in the Milan province during the first half of the last century. Once the beating heart that powered looms and production lines, this industrial relic is now all that remains of a much larger complex. While nearly all the other facilities have been demolished or repurposed over time, this power plant has somehow survived, standing alone as a silent witness to an era of industrial ambition, labor, and transformation that shaped the local landscape.

CENTRALE IDROELETTRICA DELL’ARDO [IT]

Exploration #270 Centrale idroelettrica dell’Ardo. The idea of bringing electric lighting to Belluno dates back to 1890, when the opportunity to replace oil lamps was considered. Initially, it was thought to exploit the Ardo torrent, but its inconstant flow forced the search for alternatives. Thus, in 1897, the first power station was built on the Caorame stream, 25 km from the city, guaranteeing the lighting of 260 incandescent lamps.

The increasing demand for energy soon made a new plant necessary. In 1907, the Società Bellunese Industria Elettrica started the construction of the Ardo power station, which went into operation in 1910 with two Francis turbines, manufactured by the Riva company of Milan. The facility, with a capacity of almost 500 kW, supplied energy for public lighting and local industries.

After passing under the control of SADE and then ENEL, the power station operated until 1966, when a flood of the torrent severely damaged the hydraulic works. In 1968, ENEL decided not to renew the concession, judging the restoration to be unsustainable. Since then, the building has been left to decay, a victim of theft, vandalism and, finally, the collapse of the roof, which has made any hypothesis of recovery impossible.
Today, the Ardo power station is reduced to a ruin: without a roof, the interior is invaded by vegetation and the structure continues to deteriorate..

VISMARA SALUMI [IT]

In progress…

Exploration #262 Vismara salumi. This industry was founded in 1898 and distinguished itself as one of the oldest brands of Italian charcuterie. It grew in the period between the two world wars and in the 1950s began exporting its products internationally. In the 1960s, it also made a name for itself with television advertisements, introducing innovations such as the slicing trays in the 1970s.

In the early 2000s, it closed its historic factory in the centre of town to open a new, more modern factory nearby. Since then, the buildings have been in a state of disrepair. In 2026 demolitions works have started.

HFB [BE]

Gallery in progress…

Exploration #261 HFB. Hauts-Forneaux B (HFB), located in Seraing near Liège, is a striking symbol of the region’s rich industrial heritage. This blast furnace, part of the larger Cockerill-Sambre steelworks, played a pivotal role in the development of the steel industry in Wallonia, a region historically known as one of Europe’s industrial powerhouses.

Built in 1959, HFB was a cornerstone of the steelmaking process in Liège for decades. Its towering structure and intricate network of pipes, chimneys, and conveyor systems epitomized the industrial ambition of the mid-20th century. The furnace was designed to smelt iron ore into molten iron, which was then used to produce steel. During its peak, the furnace operated continuously, producing hundreds of thousands of tons of iron annually. It provided employment for thousands of workers, fostering economic growth and transforming Seraing into a thriving industrial hub. However, by the late 20th century, global economic changes and competition from other steel-producing regions led to a decline in the European steel industry. HFB was initially shut down in 2009, but operations briefly resumed from April 2009 until April 2010. Despite this short-lived revival, the site was ultimately closed permanently in 2011, marking the definitive end of its industrial activity.

Following its closure, HFB gained a second life as a beloved destination for urban explorers from around the world. The site became an emblem of urban exploration, showcasing the haunting beauty of forgotten spaces while preserving a piece of Wallonia’s industrial identity.

Starting from 2023, most of the HFB site was demolished, marking a significant shift in its story. However, the iconic blast furnace itself and the adjacent boiler house were preserved, reflecting their historical and cultural importance. These remaining structures stand as monuments to Liège’s industrial past, bridging the gap between the region’s legacy and its future. While much of the site is now gone, these preserved landmarks ensure that the memory of HFB endures, continuing to inspire those who cherish its history.

CARTIERA SOTTRICI BINDA [IT]

Exploration #255 Cartiera Sottrici Binda. The former Binda paper mill in Vaprio d’Adda was founded in 1890 by the Binda family, active in the production of paper, and was one of the most important industrial companies in the area in the late 19th and early 20th century. The strategic location along the Adda river was ideal for industrial activity, as the river provided the water power needed to drive the paper mill machinery.

The surrounding area was already well known for its industrial activities, thanks to the presence of the Naviglio della Martesana canal and the Edison hydroelectric power plant in Vaprio d’Adda. In its peak years, the Binda paper mill employed many people in the area, contributing significantly to the economic development of the area. Every Vaprio family had at least one member employed at the paper mill or at the nearby Velvis velvet mill.

Production ranged from paper for notebooks, registers, envelopes and drawing sheets, to the manufacture of decorative paper for plastic laminates, which began in 1956 and became the product of excellence. However, as the years went by, the crisis in the paper industry and increasing competition led to a gradual reduction in the mill’s activities. Following several changes of ownership, the mill was finally closed in 2007 under the management of the Finnish Munksjö Paper.

CARTIERA VITA MAYER [IT]

Exploration #254 Cartiera Vita Mayer. Paper production along the Olona valley was already present in the 1700s. One of the oldest paper mills was located in Lonate Ceppino and became Cartiera Enrico Vita & C. in 1897. The management was then passed on to the sons who expanded it with new buildings and machinery; a few years later, with the marriage between Tilde Vita and Sally Mayer, a member of an important industrial family from Turin, the name became the definitive and famous name of Cartiera Vita & Mayer. The paper mill developed further, also thanks to the creation of the Valmorea railway which passed close to the factory: in 1908 it was already employing 440 people and producing 6,000 t of paper a year.

It was hit several times by violent floods of the Olona river (1908, 1911 and 1917), but this did not slow down its growth: a new renewal of the machinery took place during the First World War, and in the 20s and 30s new huge buildings and a vocational school for the training of employees were built. In 1937, a paper pulp plant (8,000 t per annum) came into operation, but the following year the Mayers, a Jewish family, were forced to emigrate because of the racial laws, and ownership of the industry passed to the government.

Once the war was over, the Mayers took back the paper mill and launched a grandiose renovation plan: between that year and 1949 the factory was enlarged with new, huge pavilions, and a power station was built on the hill above it, with a soaring concrete chimney that still marks its presence today. Despite the severe flooding in 1951, the following year a large plot of land to the south of the factory was purchased, where a new factory was erected, which took the name of Cartiera ViMa, which we will report on in another exploration.

The 1950s and 1960s were the golden years: there were 2,500 employees and six goods trains ran to and from the factory every day. Production of paper for hygienic products began (1957) and two adjacent companies located in Fagnano Olona, Cartiera Sterzi and Sacchettificio Bisson & C., were purchased and renamed Cartiera Aquila.
The crisis, due to competition from Eastern European countries and the shortage of timber, began in 1971. Agreements with the government to save the company were a failure: only 2 million lire were obtained instead of the 6 million requested, and in exchange Vita Mayer had to take over a number of paper mills in central and southern Italy, whose economic situation was even worse. As it was no longer economically viable to continue the service, the Valle Olona railway closed in 1976, which, together with two violent floods (11 June 1975 and 1 October 1976), dealt the company the final blow. The two mills were finally closed on 11 August 1977.

Since then, the cartiera Vita Mayer paper mill has remained in a state of total disrepair and nature has been able to take over many of the buildings. Partial redevelopment work began in 2017, involving the disposal of asbestos and the demolition of some buildings, leading to a future clean-up of the area. The work is currently (2021) still stopped (source: wikipedia).

EX MONTECATINI DI MORI – ALUMETAL [IT]

Exploration #253. The Alumetal aluminium factory, also known as Montecatini di Mori, was one of the leading Aluminium factories in Italy. In operation from 1928 to 1983, the factory presented technologically advanced and innovative solutions.

Alumetal was built along the right bank of the Adige River starting in 1926 by the Società Italiana dell’Alluminio (SIDA), which was the result of an agreement between Montecatini and the German company Vereinigte Aluminium Werke (VAW). Work was completed two years later, in 1928. In 1935, following the breakdown of the agreement between Montecatini and the German company, the Società Nazionale Alluminio (SNAL) was born. The factory later passed to Montedison and in 1973 was acquired by EFIM and changed its name to Alumetal.

The factory presented technologically avant-garde and innovative solutions: it was the first plant in Trentino that exploited the energy created on site for its own needs, by means of imposing hydraulic intake works on the Adige River; its derivation canal was the longest in Italy and one of the most important in Europe (2450 m); inside the hydroelectric plant (one of the most beautiful and artistically appreciable in the entire region) were located the four most powerful dynamos on the continent. The factory also patented new models of melting furnaces, experimented with new mechanical beating systems and industrially developed smoke and dust purification and washing systems that became the object of study for the world’s leading specialists.

During the Second World War, the Montecatini di Mori was declared a war factory and depended on Fabbriguerra in Bologna. The factory’s production supplied not only the Italian but also the German war industry and, with the exception of a few classes of young men, the furnace workers were not called to arms. It was during this period that the highest number of employees was reached, at 1224. The recovery after the Liberation was slow and difficult: the crisis made its effects felt, causing a drastic reduction in the workforce, which reached a low of 250 workers. This was also due to a general mechanisation of work; the worker no longer worked in direct contact with the furnace as in the early days, but controlled the pressure by sitting on a trolley equipped with a mechanical arm to beat, thus speeding up the operation.

The last years of its life were spent in a minor tone, with a reduced number of employees. The nationalisation of electricity adversely affected the company’s course. As long as Montecatini had its own power stations, this cost a few cents, but with ENEL the prices increased tenfold. With this burden, Montecatini faced the 1970s. In the meantime, competing factories had sprung up around the world and the Mori plant was no longer competitive and susceptible to further production development. The company’s new owner, the state-owned E.F.I.M., was only a bureaucratic presence.

In March 1983, the closure became definitive.

SAPONIFICO LEDÀ [IT]

Exploration #251 Saponificio Ledà. The former Ledà soap factory was built by Giovanni Carlini at the end of the 19th century in an area where the Carlini mill already stood.

It was originally a sulphur soap factory for the production of Oneglia-type soap. It was powered by a steam engine and a water mill and the power was transmitted through a complex belt drive system that is still visible today. Later the factory was bought by the Ledà family, one of Sassari’s historical noble families. The soap factory experienced its greatest period of prosperity here: sales spread throughout Sardinia, and the plant was expanded and grew structurally, also associating the production of olive pomace oil.

After a few decades and for reasons not entirely known, the factory closed its doors and was abandoned to itself, leaving the machinery in place.
