ZUCCHERIFICIO S.M. [IT]

Exploration #244 Zuccherificio S.M. The SM sugar factory was founded in May 1900. In those years, Italy had many similar companies springing up all over the country due to the difficulty of procuring cane sugar from abroad.
These early sugar factories were real citadels of labour, where all stages of sugar production were carried out using beets grown in the areas surrounding the factory.
This sugar factory belonged to the Belgian ‘Société Générale de Sucrerie’ and produced an average of 10,000 quintals of sugar per year. The factory remained in operation until the 1970s when it was decided to stop production due to obsolescence of the machinery and to build a new, more modern complex nearby.
Since then, these old buildings typical of the industrial landscape at the beginning of the last century occupy this disused area awaiting redevelopment.
