EX CEMENTIFICIO ITALCEMENTI ALZANO LOMBARDO [IT]

Exploration #18. This former cement factory Italcementi in Alzano Lombardo was for a long time one of the largest and most modern cement plants in Europe. It was founded by the Pesenti brothers in 1878, on a refurbishment of a paper mill, and was bought by Italcementi in the mid-20th century, becoming the company’s historic building. It was decommissioned in the 1970s due to loss of technological capacity (the furnaces were finally shut down in 1966).

The peculiarity of the space did not allow the establishment of new activities, so it was abandoned. The cement factory was listed in 1980 as a monument of industrial archaeology. In fact, it was built using almost exclusively the same materials that were produced there: white and grey cement, the three varieties of Portland cement and Grenoble quick-setting cement. Unfortunately, it is currently in a state of abandonment.
