BLUE CHRIST CHURCH [BE]

Exploration #8 The blue Christ church. This old church was built in 1876 by architect Halkin. Its characteristic cross is dated from 1875 and is 3.50 meter high and has a light blue color, which gives the name “blue Christ church” to this location.

The wooden pulpit dates from 1898. The neo-Gothic style church is built in brick and limestone, according to the plans of the architect Eugène Halkin. It is built with a western tower, a high nave of five bays with side aisles, a transept with two chapels grafted onto the arms, a deep choir ending in a three-sided apse. The furniture, or at least what remains of it, is in the Gothic Revival style. It contains font gothic dating from the XVI-th century, tombstones embossed with the coat of arms of Jehan Lonchin and Marguarit Pusher, and an organ dating from 1596.

The church got abandoned and is in a very bad state. There is no money to restore it. In summer 2015 many things were stolen from the church, like the organ pipes and the wood carvings of the altar.

The blue Christ church is not the only abandoned place of worship in Belgium. There is also a monastery, the exploration of which you can find here: monastere Antoniette.
