VILLA BECKER [IT]

Exploration #157 (testo italiano a fondo pagina). This villa has its origins in the seventeenth century but its current majesty dates back to the early twentieth century, when it was completely rebuilt by Sir Walter Friederich Becker, a diplomat and important businessman. The exterior was designed by the famous Art Nouveau architect Pietro Fenoglio and the interior decoration (including the furniture, frescoes and table) was executed under the direction of Ernesto Domenico Smeriglio in the Neo-Baroque style.
Sir Walter Becker died in Turin in 1927 at the age of 73. The pale widowed Lady Delphine remarried in 1935 to the Marquis Demetrio Imperiali di Francavilla, thirty years her junior. They continued to live in the villa at Valsalice during the war and even generously converted it into a refuge for displaced persons. When Delphine died in 1943, her second husband inherited her large fortune and later remarried twice more, squandering everything. There is no precise information on the exact date of the abandonment of the villa. Currently, after being completely emptied and partly vandalised, the house is being renovated. Questa villa ha le sue origini nel Seicento ma la attuale maestosità risale a inizio novecento, quando fu completamente ricostruita da sir Walter Friederich Becker, diplomatico ed importante uomo d’affari. Gli esterni furono progettati dall’illustre architetto del liberty Pietro Fenoglio e le parti decorative interne (arredi, affreschi e tavolo compreso) vennero eseguiti sotto la direzione di Ernesto Domenico Smeriglio in stile neobarocco.
Sir Walter Becker si spense a Torino nel 1927 a 73 anni. La pallida vedova lady Delphine nel 1935 si risposò con il marchese Demetrio Imperiali di Francavilla di trent’anni più giovane. I due continuarono ad abitare nella villa di Valsalice anche durante la guerra; anzi, generosamente, la trasformarono in un rifugio per gli sfollati. Quando nel 1943 Delphine morì, il secondo marito ne ereditò le grandi sostanze e si risposò in seguito altre due volte, dilapidando tutto. Non si hanno notizie precise sulla data esatta dell’abbandono della villa. Attualmente, dopo essere stata del tutto svuotata e in parte vandalizzata, la dimora è in fase di ristrutturazione. Nel 2007 Dario Argento ha qui ambientato la scena finale del film “La Terza Madre”.
