HAIKYO
HAIKYO is the Japanese word for ruin (廃墟), composed of 廃 (hai = useless, obsolete) and 墟 (kyo = hill). It is used within the urbex community to describe the profound sense of stillness and emotional tension experienced when encountering abandoned places. It refers to the moment in which an explorer becomes deeply aware of the silence, decay, and history embedded in a forgotten structure the feeling that time has stopped, yet the traces of human presence remain. In urbex culture, Haikyo captures the unique blend of melancholy, fascination, and respect that defines the exploration of spaces left behind.
